Taylor never intended for her story to be so widely shared. She didn’t want the spotlight shined on her. Her mission was – and still is – to shine that spotlight on the hidden horrors forced upon animals raised for food.
On September 21, Tom Logan, a former COK intern, will run the Kodiak 50-miler in Big Bear, California! His goal isn’t just to cross the finish line — he’s taking on this endurance challenge to raise $5,000 for Compassion Over Killing’s life-saving campaigns for farmed animals.
Shortly after the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released an undercover video exposing extreme animal abuse inside Wyoming Premium Farms, a pig breeding factory farm, several employees, including two managers, were charged with cruelty to animals.
Earlier this week, hundreds of people—including animal advocates, non-profit organizations (such as Compassion Over Killing), veterinarians, vet students, and countless other caring individuals attended a public hearing in Boston, Massachusetts to show their support for a bill aiming to protect farmed animals in the state.
Last week, leaking ammonia caused an animal slaughter plant in China to go up in flames, resulting in 120 human deaths, and an unknown number of chickens also perished. While many have pointed fingers at China’s lax safety standards–and it’s justifiable that these standards be looked at–it’s also time to reexamine the fire safety standards in U.S. slaughter plants and factory farms.
We saw in the last election the fate of political candidates who for some reason felt compelled to talk repeatedly—and often ignorantly—about rape. Well, now Republican Tennessee state representative Andy Holt, the sponsor of the state’s ag-gag bill to criminalize whistleblowers at factory farms, is joining that club.
Animal agribusiness interests are working feverishly to pass state-level anti-whistleblower laws aimed at criminalizing undercover investigations. In 2012, such laws passed in Iowa and Utah, and so far this year, “ag-gag” bills have been introduced in nearly a dozen states. Why?
Whether it’s television, print news, radio, film, or music, media has the power to shape—and change—social attitudes as well as our behaviors for the good. To celebrate the important role that news and entertainment media play in raising awareness about animal protections issues, the Humane Society of the United States hosts the annual Genesis Awards.
Imagine the misery of being intensively confined day in and day out inside a tiny, overcrowded space with barely enough room to move. Now imagine being stuck there starving and thirsty without any food or water, and there’s no way you can escape.
