One Day Only: KFC to Trial Beyond Meat Fried Chicken in Atlanta

This summer has experienced a windfall of meatless options popping up in convenient fast-food restaurant locations. The latest: KFC will be testing Beyond Meat fried chicken in one Atlanta location. After teasing an Impossible Whopper, Burger King recently went nationwide with the plant-based burger, just as Subway announced a trial of a Beyond Meatball Marinara sub and Dunkin’ debuted a Beyond breakfast sausage patty in Manhattan locations. Now, the chain known for its secret eleven herbs and spices is joining the fun.

Though many vegans may balk at the idea with hesitations over cross-contamination or supporting a meat-based fast-food chain, one can still appreciate just how big a deal this sudden deluge of meatless fast-food is. In a world where billions of chickens languish on factory farms, subjected to cruel rapid growth just to be killed at around 45 days old, opting for a chicken-less lunch or dinner should be easy, accessible, and cheap.

These plant-based products at large chains like KFC and Burger King are largely meant for the “flexitarian” audience, many of whom are concerned about their health or the future of the planet. Still: the benefit for animals is great.

In a press release, KFC announced what will be available for the limited test on August 27: “Beyond Fried Chicken is available in nuggets with choice of favorite dipping sauce, like KFC’s signature Finger Lickin’ Good sauce, or boneless wings tossed in one of three delicious sauce options: Nashville Hot, Buffalo or Honey BBQ.”

Prices range from à la carte nuggets at $1.99 to 12-piece boneless “wings” for $12.
