ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — March 14, 2019 — Mayor Tim Keller has issued a proclamation declaring March 20, 2019 “MeatOut Day” in Albuquerque, N.M., recognizing the benefits of vegan eating for the environment, public health, and animals.

The city of Albuquerque, as well as Santa Fe which has also issued a proclamation, were inspired by the MeatOut campaign by national animal protection nonprofit Compassion Over Killing (COK), after a request from the organization’s Special Projects Manager Robin Walker, who calls Albuquerque her hometown.

First started in 1985, MeatOut is celebrated on March 20 — the first day of Spring, and joined worldwide by thousands who are turning over a new leaf by exploring vegan eating.

“MeatOut inspires thousands to spring into action by pledging vegan, hosting an event to help others in their community choose healthy and sustainable vegan foods, and by engaging their local governments to honor MeatOut Day,” said Simone de Lima, Director of Outreach & Education, Compassion Over Killing.

COK took on the MeatOut campaign in 2018, empowering over 60 vegan events in countries around the world and prompting five government proclamations including in Washington, DC.

This year’s MeatOut is expected to be an even sweeter success, already inspiring over 80 events.

In addition to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, Montgomery County, Md. as well as the cities of Philadelphia, Pa., Takoma Park, Md. and Ithaca, N.Y. have all declared March 20 to be “MeatOut Day,” with more proclamations expected in other cities and counties.
