Sick to Death: Phantom Antibiotics in Our Food

Last week was antibiotic awareness week  – did you miss it?

Somehow, this global week of awareness flew under the radar of many – especially in the United States. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) named their week-long campaign “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week” after an executive order from the White House, but telling the truth about antibiotic use in America is a tricky matter.

That’s because over 80% of the antibiotics in America are fed to animals on factory farms. The majority of antibiotics aren’t used to help the 14.5 million American cancer patients, or the 26.6 million who suffer from heart disease. The majority of antibiotics in America are being forced into the bodies of tortured animals living in inexcusable conditions, awaiting slaughter – or worse yet, a lifetime of abuse.

The sheer amount in pounds of antibiotics being shoved into animals (29.9 million pounds, to be exact) are egregious, but what raises our eyebrows in utter disbelief is that the CDC itself sites that “Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. Many more people die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection.”

So what are the chances that the drugs we pump into our meat, eggs, and dairy are giving rise to these superbugs that are no longer responding to antibiotics? Are we over-consuming these drugs, directly and indirectly (through meat) to the point of rendering them ineffective? Even the CDC admits that “the use of antibiotics is the single most important factor leading to antibiotic resistance around the world.”  It’s all starting to add up.
