A recent study found that the heavy consumption of meat and other animal products, typically found in Western diets, raises the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia.
The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, explains that meat consumption has the strongest link to AD, with the dairy and egg consumption also raising the risk of the disease. The author, Dr. William Grant states that eating less meat could not only reduce the risk of AD, but also “diabetes mellitus type 2, stroke, and, likely, chronic kidney disease.”
According to the findings, while diets high in fruits and vegetables are associated with decreased risk of AD, it is also crucial that animal products be decreased — as consumption of these healthier foods alone “cannot counter the effects of meat, eggs, and high-fat dairy.”
The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) reports other studies have produced similar findings, showing the “risk for AD is greater in people with diets high in cholesterol, saturated fats, and total calories and low in fiber, vegetables, and fruits.”
