An Australian vegan couple in their 60s have set a new world record — they’ve run a marathon a day for 366 days in a row! How did this power couple fuel up for their runs? They completed this journey while eating entirely raw vegan foods.

Since beginning this project, Alan Murray, 68, and Janette Murray-Wakelin, 64, have run 9,776.75 miles. Both are originally from New Zealand, but have spent their lives traveling the world, running, and advocating for a healthy lifestyle. When asked why they chose to run these back-to-back marathons, Alan and Janette responded on their website RunningRawAroundAustralia.com:

We can lead by example, walk (or in this case) run the talk. By running a marathon distance together per day, every day for a year around Australia, we hope to inspire others to believe in themselves, to follow their dreams, and to achieve their goals through making more conscious lifestyle choices.”

Alan and Janette didn’t get to where they are today without setbacks. Perhaps one of the biggest occurred when Janette, at age 52, was diagnosed with breast cancer and given a prognosis of living six months to a year with chemotherapy. Janette chose to embrace a natural path to health, and now in her 60s teaches and guides others who encounter similar health obstacles.

Referring to the 366 marathons as the “Running Raw” project, their goal is “to inspire and motivate conscious lifestyle choices, to promote kindness and compassion for all living beings and to raise environmental awareness for a sustainable future.”

Inspired? January is the perfect time to resolve to try something new — discover how eating vegan can change your life!
