The Abolitionist: Issue 16

Dear Friend,

2005 marks an important landmark for COK—our tenth anniversary! It's hard to believe that ten years have passed since COK began advocating for animals. We've grown substantially from very modest beginnings, and it's only because of your support and dedication that we've made such strides in helping farmed animals in the past decade.

Although this year has brought many changes to COK—a larger staff, the launch of a new Research and Investigations department, and my role as the organization's executive director—one constant remains steadfast: our relentless determination to expose the miseries endured by farmed animals.

I'm thrilled to share the details of our "Animal Care Certified" campaign victory. After a hard-fought two-year effort to expose the egg industry's deceptive advertising—including several egg farm investigations, petitions filed with federal agencies, consumer polls, public outreach, and litigation-the Federal Trade Commission announced that the egg industry's misleading "Animal Care Certified" logo will be no more by March 31, 2006!

In this issue of The Abolitionist, you'll also read about our two latest undercover investigations. In February, COK investigators documented horrific—yet standard—abuses of laying hens confined in Maryland's three largest egg farms. Then, in July and August, we traveled coast to coast, filming and logging the suffering caused by interstate transport of farmed animals. National media coverage was extensive, letting millions of consumers know the realities of modern animal agribusiness.

Our work isn't limited to legal challenges and investigations. Read on for updates on some of COK's many outreach programs—including our highly successful MTV commercial campaign.

We're looking forward to the next ten years of compassionate action for animals, and I thank each of you for your support. Without you, we wouldn't be able to execute our campaigns, programs, and investigations. As COK's new executive director, I promise that I will lead with the same passion and integrity that you've come to know and expect from COK. I welcome any comments, questions, and concerns you may have, so please don't hesitate to contact me at 301-891-2458 or emeier@cok.net.

For the animals,
Miyun Park
Erica Meier
Executive Director
